Russia sees key role for FAO

RUSSIAN President Dmitry Medvedev said on Saturday that the United Nations' food agency should play a key role in helping ensure stable grain prices.

"A preference should be given to the development and reorganization of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization as a universal platform for producers and consumers," Medvedev said at the opening of the World Grain Forum in St Petersburg.

The FAO is a specialized agency of the UN that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.

Medvedev said that Russia, which joined the FAO in 2006, will continue to improve its cooperation with the Rome-based organization.

Medvedev also urged senior executives of agricultural enterprises and global authorities to work together to ensure that the global grain market is more stable.

The Russian president pushed for better cooperation and early warning to crack down on what he called price manipulation.

"It's necessary to make exporters of grain join their efforts to support acceptable prices on the grain markets," Medvedev said.

"We could discuss forming a new policy in grain production and international grain trade," he added.
