Shanghai consumers are big fan of Alipay

SHANGHAI residents spend the most through Alibaba's payment and financial affiliate Alipay, with average spending jumping nearly 50 percent from a year ago to 148,000 yuan (US$21,449) in 2016, according to latest figures from Alipay.

Out of the total spending, purchasing of physical goods contribute 16,804 yuan while other online services such as payment of public utility bills and wealth management products have also been gained momentum.

Overseas payment through digital channels is also a bright spot and according to Alipay data, the top outbound traveling destinations include South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.

Among Shanghai consumers, the average amount of overseas payments through Alipay nearly doubled from a year ago to 1,471.8 yuan.

Another four provinces and municipalities saw average individual expenditure through Alipay surpassing 100,000 yuan, including Beijing, Fujian, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

In terms of total transaction amount through Alipay, Shanghai came in at the fourth place, following Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
