Shanghai floats plan to be Asian cruise center
SHANGHAI has ambitions to sail to a leading position in the cruise market and join Singapore and Hong Kong as one of Asia's top three cruise centers, city's tourism officials said.
Under a five-year development plan drafted by the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, local shipyards will be upgraded with core technology to help them design and manufacture luxury cruise liners by 2015, said Shen Shanzhou, vice chairman of the administration.
"We will also work on stimulus measures to encourage domestic cruise companies to set up their headquarters in Shanghai as well as attract one or two foreign companies to locate their regional offices here," Shen added.
Shanghai Port is forecast to handle 300,000 passengers this year, nearly doubling the figure in 2009, said Dao Shuming, chairman of the administration, as he spoke during the China Cruise Industry Development Summit 2010 in Shanghai yesterday.
