Shanghai ranks 11th of world's top 20 retail hubs

Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo are among the world's top 20 retail hubs while London remains the first choice for international retailers, according to a survey released today by CB Richard Ellis, an international real estate consultancy.

The annual survey that tracks the footprints of the world's 326 major retailers in more than 200 countries put the three Chinese cities on its Top 20 List -- Hong Kong No. 6, Shanghai No.11 and Beijing No.13.

Singapore secured a 10th position while Tokyo was ranked No.19.

"The results show very healthy levels of activity in the key Asian markets as brands remain keen to look for new growth opportunities amid continuing rise in consumer purchasing power and ever growing level of fashion sophistication across the region," said Sebastian Skiff, executive director of CBRE Retail Asia. "We are seeing a continued flow of new brands approaching us for help in targeting the Asian markets and we notice strong demand for 2013 from the US, European and Australian brands."

For other Chinese cities, Hangzhou again took a Top 50 spot while Shenzhen secured a Top 60 position. Nanjing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Tianjin, Dalian and Suzhou are all in the Top 100, according to the survey.

The survey, however, indicated that an under-supply of good-quality commercial real estate in prime areas in key cities is one of the barriers for international retailers to enter the Chinese market.

Globally, London retained its No. 1 position as the most targeted market for international retailers, followed by Dubai and New York, the survey said.
