Suning in ambitious expansion plans

SUNING Appliance Co, China's largest consumer electronics chain, is set to further tap into the department store sector with extended presence, both physical and online.

The Nanjing-based retailer, which plans to add more than 400 self-branded outlets in China this year, said that it will also open 30 department stores under the Laox brand, selling furniture, toys, musical instruments and other goods besides electrical appliances.

Laox, a Japanese electronics retailer in which Suning owns a 51 percent stake, unveiled its first Chinese outlet in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, in December and notched up a revenue of 35 million yuan (US$5.56 million) three days after the launch.

And its mouse-and-click store, Suning.com, aims to strengthen its foothold in the online department store sector with improved efficiency in warehousing and fulfilling orders. To achieve that, it will finish the site selection of logistics centers in 60 cities this year, break ground on seven new centers and finish the six currently under construction.
