Suspect denied job slashed beverage tycoon's hand near his home

A 49-YEAR-OLD suspect from Suzhou has been detained in the knife attack on Zong Qinghou, until recently the richest man on the Chinese mainland, Hangzhou police said today.

The man attacked Zong, owner of Hangzhou Wahaha Group, early Friday morning near his home in Hangzhou, cutting the tendons in four of the fingers of his left hand.

Police detained the man, surnamed Yang, in his rented house on Sunday.

Yang, a native of Suzhou, was seeking a job in Hangzhou while living on 30,000 yuan (US$4,918) he had borrowed. He intended to get a job in Zong’s company after seeing a TV interview with Zong, who has helped many migrant workers.

Since his wish was not achieved, Yang took out his anger on Zong, according to police.

An investigation was underway amidst today’s media reports of the incident.

Zong topped a ranking of the 500 richest people on the Chinese mainland in March with 70 billion yuan (US$11.38 billion) in personal assets.

He was replaced this month by 59-year-old real estate tycoon Wang Jianlin, who the Hurun Research Institute said had a personal fortune of 135 billion yuan (US$22 billion).
