Wages in big cities falling

SALARIES in major cities in China have declined quarter on quarter for the first time since 2016 as a talent war among small businesses lost steam, recruitment portal Zhaopin.com said in a report yesterday.
Average salary in China’s 37 top cities was 7,376 yuan (US$1,085) by the end of the second quarter, a 3.8 percent drop from the first quarter.
Micro and small sized companies led the decline as average salaries in these business dropped 31 percent quarter on quarter.
The report attributed the decline to an ebbing salary-war among startups as investment in these companies became more rational.
The national average salary also declined as recruitment cooled in first-tier cities due to high living costs, and companies shifting their labor-intensive jobs to smaller cities.
But Beijing continued to be the best-paid city with an average salary of 9,791 yuan, followed by Shanghai on 9,337 yuan and Shenzhen on 8,866 yuan.
Sales, administration and software and Internet development jobs were the most in-demand jobs in the second quarter.
In Shanghai, professional services were the highest-paid jobs with the average salary standing at 13,161 yuan, the report said. Competition is toughest in software and Internet development, followed by information technology, quality management, and advanced management.
