Walt Disney forms creative partnership

WALT Disney Co yesterday formed a partnership with Tencent, China's largest Internet company, as well as the state-backed China ACG Group to develop creative animation projects.

The three parties signed the deal in Beijing yesterday. The joint projects will include screening and choosing creative animation works, carrying out high-quality animation products design and cross-border cultural exchanges.

Industry insiders said the deal could boost the development of China's animation industry and that Disney will gain from the tie-up as it will enable the US firm to distribute content in the domestic market.

Liang Gang, chairman of China ACG Group, said: "The partnership is expected to combine the creative force from home and abroad and will enhance China's animation industry as a whole."

Ren Yuxin, president of Tencent Games, said his firm will leverage its rich experience in gaming in the animation business.

China's animation sector was worth 47 billion yuan (US$7.4 billion) in 2010, the Ministry of Culture said.
