Balancing to narrow income gap

SHANGHAI will continue to balance development of urban and rural areas to narrow the income gap, city officials told a media conference yesterday.

The average income of rural residents in Shanghai was 21,192 yuan (US$3,327) in 2014, less than half of the 47,710 yuan that urban residents earned last year.

The government yesterday said the gap resulted from lower funding for rural areas in developing public services.

The government will release more public resources to rural areas to balance the general development between rural and urban areas. More funds will go to transport and environmental amenities.
