China slaps duty on US chicken imports
CHINA announced today it will impose a countervailing duty of up to 31.4 percent on imports of American chicken products, the latest move in the escalating trade disputes between the two countries.
A preliminary ruling posted on the Ministry of Commerce's Website said the United States government provided subsidies for their chicken producers and the subsidized chicken imports from the US caused substantial damage to the Chinese industry.
The ruling said China will slap a 31.4-percent tariff on US imports of chicken products, and for companies that responded to the investigation the duty will be between 3.8 and 11.2 percent.
Customs will collect a deposit based on the ruling starting tomorrow.
The volume of US chicken imports was not immediately known.
"We have seen a lot of disputes emerging in the past few months, and we will continue to see such cases because all countries want to exploit export opportunities and reduce imports to consolidate their own economic recovery," said Sun Lijian, an economics professor at Fudan University.
"However, trade protectionism is harmful to the global recovery. More reasonable practice is to focus on how to promote exports, instead of on curbing imports."
This month China has seen a slew of new trade disputes. The US said last Wednesday it initiated an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation on Chinese aluminum extrusions, after the European Union decided to begin a countervailing probe into China's exports of coated paper.
Last week, China also announced to slap anti-dumping duties on imports of nylon 6 from the US, EU, Russia and Taiwan.
