Chinese college graduates ask for higher salaries, survey shows

GRADUATES from top universities in China are asking for higher salaries while nearly half of them said they have breached contracts with employers in job hunting, recruitment portal 51job.com said in a survey today.
A total 52 percent of the graduates in best universities in 25 largest cities in China asked for salaries between 6,000 yuan (US$952) and 8,000 yuan, 9 percentage points higher than last year, 51job said in a survey covering 100,637 university students.
About 10 percent asked for salaries above 10,000 yuan, and the rest are happy with salary between 2,000 and 4,000 yuan, the report said.
Employers are finding it more difficult to meet rising demands from top university graduates as they need to spend nearly 4,000 yuan to secure a contract from campus recruitment in these universities, some 20 percent more than average spending.
Forty-six percent of the respondents said they have breached contract with employers, and 26 percent blamed employers for breaching a contract.
