Confidence climbs as World Cup, holidays boost bankcard spending

THE relatively strong spending sentiment due to the summer holidays boosted bankcard owners’ confidence in June.

The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index climbed 0.56 from a month ago to 85.27 points in June as expenditure on dining, entertainment and travel picked up ahead of the annual summer vacation, China UnionPay, the sole bankcard transaction firm, said in a report yesterday.

The size of expenditure at domestic travel agents jumped 17.52 percent from a month ago as the summer holidays are usually a peak season for travel.

Spending value at airline ticket offices also saw a 13.06 percent monthly gain.

Card holders’ spending at entertainment venues rose 1.12 percent from a month ago as the World Cup boosted expenditure at bars and night clubs.

The loosening of the loan deposit ratio requirement is expected to stabilize the country’s macroeconomic situation and thus lift consumer sentiment in the second half of the year, UnionPay predicted.
