Court upholds Zijin's fine ruling

A court in Fujian Province has rejected Zijin Mining Group Co's appeal against an earlier verdict to fine the company 30 million yuan (US$4.6 million) for a major toxic mine spill last year.

The province's Longyan City Intermediate People's Court upheld the decision issued by a district court in late January, China's leading gold miner said as it received the criminal judgment.

The July accident at the company's Zijinshan gold and copper mine poisoned thousands of fish and polluted drinking water. Zijin had also tried to bribe reporters to cover up the toxic spill, according to China's press watchdog.

The Longyan court also revised the original prison terms of 3 years to 4 1/2 years to between 3 years and 3 1/2 years for five defendants in the case, Zijin Mining said in a stock exchange filing yesterday, without specifying details.

Zijin said that it will still have to pay 20.4 million yuan after the court deducted the administrative fine amounting to 9.56 million yuan that has already been paid to Fujian's environmental protection authority.

The verdict is final, according to the company.
