Governor of Illinois bolsters cooperation

BUSINESS, cultural and educational cooperation between China and the United States was boosted further yesterday when Pat Quinn, governor of the state of Illinois, led a trade delegation to Shanghai and signed a string of agreements.

Among the deals, Shanghai Biopharmaceutics Industry Association and the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition signed a letter of intent to form closer research and development ties.

In addition, Xiamen C&D agreed to buy 250,000 tons of Illinois corn products for US$70 million by December next year.

Quinn said: "Agriculture and biotechnology in Illinois are big business. I am sure there are huge opportunities if we can enhance cooperation with China in these sectors."

The agreement with Xiamen C&D will help Illinois achieve the goal of doubling exports by 2014, which is part of a broader policy emphasis on exports by US President Barack Obama's administration. China is now Illinois's third-largest export destination.

In the cultural sphere, Quinn announced the twinning of the Illinois River with Shanghai's Huangpu River, and the city of Morton with Tiantai County in east China's Zhejiang Province.

In education, the 1,000 School Initiative was launched to promote training and educational exchanges of staff and students between Illinois and Zhejiang Province.
