Industrial output and FAI grow

CHINA'S industrial output and fixed-asset investment posted a stable growth in September as the country's economy expanded rapidly.

Industrial output grew 13.8 percent year on year last month, faster than the 13.5 percent annual growth in August.

State-owned companies boosted their industrial output by an annual 10.4 percent in the first three quarters while that of joint-stock enterprises rose 10.6 percent and foreign-held companies by 10.1 percent.

In the first three quarters of this year, industrial output rose 14.2 percent annually but it dipped 0.1 percentage point from the growth in the first half of this year.

On a monthly basis, the output in September gained 1.2 percent from that of August, spokesman Sheng Laiyun of the National Statistics Bureau said at a press conference yesterday.

Moody's Analytics said in a report yesterday that China's industrial sector ''has cooled from the first half of this year in response to tighter monetary policies and a weaker external demand.''

Meanwhile, urban fixed-asset investment in the first nine months climbed an annual 24.9 percent, a slight drop from the 25 percent growth in the first eight months of this year.

Private companies invested 34.2 percent more between January and September, accounting for 59 percent of total investment in a signal of "positive signs of growth", Sheng said.

"Fixed-asset investment is expanding at an annual pace of around 25 percent after posting an unsustainable 30 percent growth in the past two years, and the moderation in the growth is at a controlled pace," the Moody's report said.

Barclays' Capital expects investment growth to generally ease on tightening measures but investment in rural infrastructure, water conservancy projects and public housing construction will continue to expand, it said in a note yesterday.
