Inflation eases to 4.1 % in December, a 15-month low

THE Consumer Price Index, a main inflation gauge, rose 4.1 percent in December from a year earlier. It eased for a fifth straight month and was the slowest since September 2010.

On a monthly basis, December's CPI edged up 0.3 percent, the National Statistics Bureau said on its website today.

Food costs, a major force driving prices up, grew 9.1 percent year on year last month, up from 8.8 percent in November, the National Bureau of Statistics said.

Last year, China's CPI rose 5.4 percent year on year, failing to meet the target of 4 percent set by the government at the beginning of last year. The CPI hit a 37-month high of 6.5 percent in July.
