Ireland eyes closer business ties with China
Irish Vice Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore said in Shanghai today that closer business ties are expected between Ireland and China.
"One of the potential areas is the access of Irish beef to China," Gilmore said, noting it is what has been discussed with Chinese authorities during his two-day trip in the country which ended today.
Besides the food sector, Gilmore said Ireland is also strong in financial services, energy, pharmaceuticals and life-science sectors that may provide Chinese investors with good investment opportunities.
Ireland also simplified the process of visa application this year to attract more Chinese tourists. It also worked on a common visa program together with the United Kingdom, which allowed people to visit both countries with one visa.
"The business relationship between Ireland and China is good and is growing," Gilmore said, adding Irish exports to China has doubled in the past three years.
Talking about the recent trade dispute on solar panels between China and European Union, Gilmore said it is not the mainstream as trade activity subject to disputes accounts for only 1 percent of the total trade between both sides.
