Japan's Exports Rise As Demand Recovers
JAPAN'S exports surged for a second straight month in January as demand in Asia for cars and high-tech goods underpinned a recovery in the world's No. 2 economy.
Exports rose 40.9 percent from a year earlier to 4.9 trillion yen (US$54.4 billion), the finance ministry said yesterday. In December, exports jumped 12 percent, breaking 15 months of decline.
Asia-bound exports rose by over two-thirds annually to 2.7 trillion yen in January - proving the rising importance of Asian markets in Japan's economic recovery.
"Booming demand in Asia continues to support a recovery in Japanese exports,'' said Hideki Matsumura, senior economist at Japan Research Institute.
