Macau's trade gap widens by nearly 6%

MACAU'S trade deficit for the first 11 months of this year widened by 5.6 percent over the same period of last year to 26.04 billion patacas (US$3.3 billion), according to the figures released yesterday by its Statistics and Census Service.

The data showed that the value of total goods exports fell by 53.7 percent annually to 6.99 billion patacas in the first 11 months, while that of goods imports slid by 16.9 percent to 33.03 billion patacas.

The exports-imports ratio fell by 16.8 percentage points on an annual basis to 21.2 percent.

Analyzed by destination of exports, the value of exports to the United States, the European Union and the Chinese mainland dropped by 79.6 percent, 60.1 percent and 44.5 percent year on year respectively.

The value of textile and garment exports tumbled by 73.1 percent from a year ago to account for 33.4 percent of the total exports of goods, while the value of non-textile exports fell by 27.5 percent.

The value of imports from the mainland fell by 35.2 percent from a year earlier, but that from the EU rose by 8.8 percent.
