More trade disputes with US forecast

FIERCE trade disputes between the United States and China are expected this year as the US struggles to protect jobs and spur economic growth, analysts said.

But it is not fair and not wise for the US to use China as a whipping boy for its high unemployment, and trade frictions between the two economic powerhouses will harm the world economic recovery, they said.

The US announced on Saturday it will impose anti-dumping duties of up to 231.4 percent on gift-wrapping ribbons from Chinese mainland and Taiwan, according to Shanghai Securities News today.

It came one day after China's decision to impose tariffs on the imports of chicken products from the US.

Jin Canrong, a professor of international relations at Renmin University of China, said such retaliatory actions by the US may take place frequently this year as the Obama Administration vows to lower the unemployment rate.

"It is a challenge for the US to revive its economy and increase the number of jobs available," Jin said. "To make China a scapegoat seems to be easy, but it is definitely not a solution to the deep-rooted problems in the US."
