New business school opens in Suzhou

International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) was officially inaugurated today in the city’s Dushuhu Science and Education Zone, which serves as a talent pool to power the city’s economic growth.

Upgraded from the former Business & Economy Department of Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in Suzhou, the IBSS is a business-oriented school offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Its international MBA program is due to start in early 2014.

The day-long opening ceremony featured the theme of “Innovation, China’s next challenge,” keynote speeches in the morning and three panel discussions in the afternoon, focusing on management, economics and finance respectively. Local and international business leaders gave speeches on how vital innovation has become in China’s ambition to move from the world’s factory to a global business center and how multinationals can sustain their growth this country amid escalating competition from their local piers.

During the ceremony, Thomson Reuters and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) signed agreements with IBSS to establish a financial lab and a career guidance office on the campus. It marked new milestone in the heart of this dynamic economic area.

Speaking of the school’s cooperation with the two world-famous financial institutions, Professor Sarah Dixon, dean of IBSS, said: “In the context of the liberalization of the Chinese financial markets, we offer students the real opportunity of using the Thomson Reuters Financial Lab to simulate the experience of working in financial institutions such as banks, fund houses, and securities firms.”
