Pudong to set up eight bases for multinationals

THE Pudong New Area will establish eight bases to attract more multinational corporations to set up their regional headquarters in the area, officials announced yesterday.

The eight areas, including Zhoupu, Caolu and Linggang, have a total area of 2.78 square kilometers.

Pudong is now home to the regional offices of 164 multinational companies, half of the city's total.

Pudong yesterday issued preferential policies to attract multinationals. The incentives include improved customs clearance services and simpler foreign exchange administration.

Benefits to high-level foreign staff at multinational headquarters will include more convenient entry and exit procedures and subsidies for purchasing or renting apartments.

Thirteen firms signed contracts worth US$800 million yuan with the government yesterday to erect new headquarters or increase the capital for existing headquarters yesterday, including BP, which plans to set up its China headquarters in Pudong.

Pudong plans to attract nearly 100 more multinationals in the next five years.

In the first five months of this year, Pudong attracted 14 new multinational headquarters.

In comparison, the area attracted a total of 18 multinational headquarters last year.
