Shanghai backs two-way Taiwan investment
The Shanghai government will take active steps to support and foster two-way investment between Shanghai and Taiwan, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said while meeting top Taiwan business leaders this morning, on the second day of his four-day visit to the island.
Han is leading a delegation looking for cooperation opportunities and potential business partners on the island.
Han told company leaders that Shanghai expects to see more active two-way cross-Straits investment and would support and encourage more Shanghai companies to invest and launch businesses in Taiwan.
Shanghai and rest of the Yangtze Delta Region have proved attractive to Taiwan investors since 1987 when capital from the island started pouring into the region, Han said.
Three Shanghai-based companies have opened branches or representative operations in Taiwan since last June after Taiwanese authorities officially opened channels for mainland investors to launch business on the island.
Han also met Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the Taiwan Straits Exchange Foundation.
The mayor is scheduled to visit Taipei's National Palace Museum, and the Beitou Garbage Incineration Plant today, as well as riding the Taipei subway.
Honorary chairman of the Kuomingtang Party, Wu Poh-hsiung, will host a banquet dinner for the Shanghai government delegation tonight.
After dinner, Han is due to visit Taipei's icon building, Taipei 101, as well as the city's famous cultural landmark, the Eslite Bookstore.
