Shanghai upgrades industrial model
SHANGHAI conducted 577 programs to upgrade its industrial structure in the first half of this year as the city moves to reduce energy consumption and raise the efficiency of land use.
These programs sought to overcome challenges brought by the impact of the city’s increasing population on land and limited natural resources, Shanghai Economy and Informatization Commission said yesterday.
Since 2007, Shanghai has closed down more than 6,400 factories and companies for causing pollution or consuming abundant energy. Factories with low productivity or have high environmental risks have also been targeted under the program.
The government last year shut 644 such factories — sacrificing an output value of 18.4 billion yuan (US$2.96 billion) — to improve environmental conditions.
The commission said the energy-saving efforts have resulted in not using 8.3 million tons of coal since 2007.
The closing of less competitive factories and companies helped the city save useful land equal to 8,000 hectares or the size of Putuo and Hongkou districts combined.
The government has also closed or forced the exit of more than 400 highly hazardous chemical producers from major industrial parks since 2009, resulting in stopping production of nearly 3 million tons of hazardous chemicals, according to the commission.
