Staff may quit if firms refuse high salary hike

CHINESE employers are under greater pressure this year to retain high-caliber professionals who are asking for a high pay raise, according to a human resources survey released yesterday.

Up to 80 percent of company managers interviewed say they are afraid of losing their most valuable workers as they can't afford the demand for a high salary increase, according to the survey of 3,000 Chinese firms in various sectors by Hudson Recruitment.

"The demand for high-quality professionals is rapidly increasing in China but the pool of available talent fails to grow as quickly," said Cherol Cheuk, general manager of Hudson's Shanghai branch.

About 61 percent of the company managers say it is harder to find high-skilled workers this year, especially senior management and strategic planners due to increased labor cost.

About 48 percent of the firms plan to boost their salary budget while the rest may hire qualified but less experienced staff who usually ask for lower salaries.

The survey also found that 73 percent of the workers plan to change jobs this year and 56 percent will do so within six months.
