Statistics bureau cracks down on data manipulation

THE National Statistics Bureau is aiming to boost confidence in the country's statistics system by preventing local governments from manipulating economic data and cracking down on parties who falsify data.

The Beijing-based bureau posted two cases on its website earlier involving breaches in relevant statistical laws and regulations.

According to the national bureau, the government of Yongchuan district, Chongqing, was suspected of violations against statistical laws and regulations, as it required pre-review and approval of companies' data reporting before submittal to the bureau.

Another case was about officers at Hejin Statistics Bureau in Shanxi Province ordering companies to submit fake data prepared by the local bureau itself.

"We hope companies reject and report any acts involving statistics data manipulation, forgery, or distortion. Any organizations or individuals that make data falsification will face exposure and serious punishment by the national bureau in accordance with the law," said an official at the national bureau.

In 2011, the 31 provincial-level governments reported a combined gross domestic product of 51.8 trillion yuan (US$8.2 trillion), 4.6 trillion yuan higher than the figure calculated by the National Statistics Bureau, the state-backed Economic Daily reported last month.
