"The pictures today are much better ..."
IT was a steep learning curve for Shen. He asked Yao to teach him everything the latter knew about video games, and six months later, Shen was not only an expert but also an enthusiast.
Video game bars have been enjoying great popularity in Shanghai, thanks to the coming-of-age of the game industry that started 20 years ago.
In the early 1980s, Nintendo introduced its red-and-white FC (family computer) and the game Super Mario World quickly became a worldwide hit.
Sony's Play Station largely replaced FC in the 1990s. Then, Microsoft joined the battle with the Xbox in 2001.
For a large number of the post-80s generation in China, video games are part of their golden memories.
"I started to play video games when I was a little boy," said Liu Qinyuan, a regular customer to Shen's bar. "The pictures today are much better and the games are becoming more and more interesting.
"Video games literally grew up with me, and playing them makes me feel like going back to my carefree youth."
There are dozens of similar video game bars, large and small, on the same road as Shen's. He has had to muster up ingenuity to make his bar stand out.
"The official updates published by game developers are usually very slow," said Shen.
"So I constantly change profile images, badges and team clothes, and update information when players transfer to new teams all by myself.
"Most video game enthusiasts are at the same time sports fans, so they are conscious about the information updates of the games."
Technology aside, Shen offers friendly and knowledgeable assistance to his customers. He studies every new wrinkle in the video-game industry, walks through the games with new customers and even joins them in playing.
"My commitment is that the bar won't close until the last customer is ready to leave," said Shen.
"So I often have to stay up all night on weekends when customers feel like indulging themselves in nonstop games."
