US Senate passes US$787 bln stimulus, sends to Obama

THE US Senate yesterday approved US$787 billion in spending and tax cuts to boost the ailing economy, sending the emergency stimulus legislation to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it into law.

The Senate voted 60-38 for the compromise bill on the same day the House of Representatives also passed it. Democrats who control Congress failed to win over many Senate Republicans, dashing Obama's hope the major economic package would win broad bipartisan support.
