US decision expands trade spat with China

THE scope of Sino-US trade disputes continues to expand as the United States today announced anti-dumping tariffs on their imports of China-made steel wire decking.

The US Department of Commerce said the duties, ranging from 42.61 percent to 289 percent, will be imposed upon the product, designed mainly for industrial and other commercial storage rack systems.

In November, the US announced a temporary countervailing duty of up to 438 percent on the product. China exported US$317 million worth of steel wire decking to the US in 2008.

The case follows the US announcement of its largest trade action against China last Wednesday. The US slapped punitive penalties that day on imports of oil country tubular goods from China, a market valued at US$2.7 billion.

"It is a bit unexpected to see the cases emerge so fast," said Sun Lijian, an economics professor at Fudan University. He said China should get ready for a prolonged battle and companies had better diversify their sales destinations.

Since September last year, the US has imposed tariffs on Chinese-made tires, steel pipe, steel gratings, and criticized China's practice of controlling exports of raw materials.
