Copper products output set to soar
CHINA'S copper products output is expected to reach 10 million tons this year, or about half of the world's total, an industry official said yesterday as he called for a technology upgrade to make this processing industry more competitive.
The country produced 8.9 million tons of copper products, such as pipes and tubes, last year, up 6.2 percent from 8.4 million tons in 2008.
"This year is sure to be near 10 million tons, and more optimistically, to exceed 10 million tons," said Wang Biwen, head of the copper division under the China Nonferrous Metals Fabrication Industry Association.
Output in the first half rose 17.7 percent as demand gained steadily.
Copper products are used in a wide range of fields from electronic parts to home appliances; from auto to power.
"It remains to be seen whether 10 million tons is right for China, or too much," Wang said, speaking at a conference on the sidelines of the 4th China International Exhibition for Copper Industry, Asia's leading industry show which has attracted over 200 firms from more than 10 nations.
He said China, which is short of copper resources, needs to develop new techniques and upgrade equipment at a time when competition is fierce.
The United States last month imposed dumping duties of up to 61 percent on copper pipe imports from China, affecting companies like Zhejiang Hailiang Co, China's largest listed copper tube maker, and Henan Province-based Golden Dragon Precise Copper Tube Group, the world's largest copper tube producer. Golden Dragon expects sales to exceed 20 billion yuan (US$3 billion) this year, against 18.6 billion yuan in 2009, it said.
