Huadian plans Cambodian hydro plant

CHINA Huadian Corp yesterday said it plans to build a US$558 million hydropower plant in Cambodia this year.

The 338-megawatt plant, 180 kilometers west of Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, will be the largest in Cambodia and among Huadian's overseas hydropower operations, Huadian said in a statement posted on the Website of the China Electricity Council.

Huadian, one of the country's five biggest electricity producers, has signed an agreement with the Export-Import Bank of China to finance the construction, the company said.

Huadian signed the agreement at a China-ASEAN forum which saw a total of US$4.6 billion in contracts between the two parties involving telecommunications, infrastructure construction, finance and other areas.

Cambodia's economy has grown rapidly over the past decade but basic infrastructure is still lacking, particularly in the countryside.

Apart from the hydroelectric plant, Huadian said last month it plans to build two 50MW coal-fired facilities with partner Cambodia Energy Ltd.
