Potential of CBM
COAL-BED methane (CBM), the clean energy trapped between coal seams, will make up one-third of unconventional gas supply in China by 2030, though demand growth is now slow, an industry report said.
"CBM holds huge potential in meeting the country's long-term gas supply needs, making up the second-largest domestic unconventional gas supply to shale and accounting for 14 percent of total domestic supply by 2030," Leslie Lie, a Wood Mackenzie analyst, said in a report released yesterday.
PetroChina Co could emerge as a domestic CBM leader, either independently or with foreign partners as a player in the future of global unconventional gas, given its dominant position in the gas business, the report said.
China in 2007 stripped CUCBM, a joint venture between PetroChina and China National Coal Group, of its exclusive rights to form partnerships with foreign companies in order to accelerate the development of CBM.
