Power usage low on weak industries

GROWTH in China's power consumption continued to stay low last month due to slower expansion in the industrial sector, according to data released yesterday.

The electricity consumption grew 4.5 percent from a year earlier to 455.6 billion kilowatt-hours in July, after rising 4.3 percent in June, the National Energy Administration said.

Power use growth in the first seven months eased further to 5.4 percent from a rise of 5.5 percent in the first half, the NEA said.

Data earlier this month released by the National Bureau of Statistics already pointed to weaker growth in industrial output in July amid an economic slowdown, fanning expectations the government will take further action to stimulate growth.

By breakdown, power use by the primary industry, which refers to agriculture, forestry and fishery, fell 0.4 percent to 58.9 billion kWh between January and July while the secondary industry, or the industrial sector, used 3.6 percent more power to 2.1 trillion kWh, the NEA said.

Power consumption in the tertiary industry, or the service industry, rose 11.9 percent to 319.3 billion kWh in the first seven months.
