Shanghai shows the way on energy consumption
CLEAN coal power plants in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province are cited as examples of where China wants to be heading on energy consumption.
Ning Jizhe, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, said the country would trim 50 gigawatts in coal power capacity this year by “closing plants, banning or suspending production.”
The “clean plants” in Shanghai and Zhejiang generated “lower carbon emissions even compared with developed countries,” said Ning, adding that the low-efficient, small plants in other regions would be weeded out. There would also be a crackdown on illegal products such as steel made from scrap metal.
