Uranium pact
CHINA National Nuclear Corp, the country's largest nuclear generator, has signed an agreement with Canada-based Cameco to buy 10,000 tons of uranium concentrate for 10 years through 2020, the first long-term uranium supply contract between the two countries.
The deal was signed during President Hu Jintao's visit to Canada during the G20 Summit, according to a statement by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council yesterday.
"It represented a vital measure for the country to explore overseas energy resources. It is a meaningful step to secure the country's energy resources as it broadens the channels of overseas energy sources," the statement said.
China, the fastest growing country in terms of nuclear capacity, plans to increase its nuclear capacity from 9 gigawatts now to at least 70 GW by 2020.
