Voith displays its power

GERMANY'S Voith yesterday said it has won a hydropower equipment contact worth about 700 million yuan (US$110 million) from the State Grid Corp of China.

Under the deal, Voith's Shanghai unit will supply four pumped storage units, each with a capacity of 300 megawatts, to State Grid's Jiangxi Hongping Pumped Storage Power Plant.

Pumped storage hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectric power generation used by some power plants for load balancing. Under the system, water is pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation by using low cost, off-peak power production at times of low electrical demand, and is released back into the lower reservoir through a turbine, generating power when demand peaks or when electricity prices are higher.

As of 2011, China had built 24 pumped storage power plants, with a total installed capacity of about 18,718MW.
