Work begins on nuke reactor

CHINA National Nuclear Corp has started building a 650-megawatt generating unit in south China's Hainan Province, which joins dozens of reactors under construction in the country.
The No. 2 reactor, one of two being built in the first phase of the Changjiang plant in the island province will start commercial operations in 2015, CNNC said yesterday. Construction for the first reactor, of the same capacity, started in April and operation will start before the end of 2014.
The cost of the first phase of the Changjiang facility, jointly invested by CNNC and China Huaneng Group, will exceed 20 billion yuan (US$3 billion). This project is the first nuclear power plant to be built in China's ethnic minority areas.
China is accelerating construction of reactors to cut reliance on coal-fired plants which now contribute more than three quarters of the country's power generation.
In September, Zhang Guobao, director of the National Energy Administration, revealed that 25 reactors, with a combined capacity of 27,730MW, are being built in China.
Last month, CNNC started commercial operation of a 650MW unit in Qinshan in Zhejiang Province.
