30 held in VAT scam

MORE than 30 people have been detained in connection with a 30 billion yuan (US$4.6 billion) tax cheat, police said yesterday.

The suspects are alleged to have bought value-added tax invoices from members of the Shanghai Gold Exchange, sold gold without invoices to retailers and issued VAT receipts to shell companies around the country.
