Auditor finds 2 billion yuan in airport irregularities

CHINA'S top auditor dug out more than 2 billion yuan (US$304 million) of irregularities in construction projects by the country's 31 major airports.

Five airports in Fujian Province and Inner Mongolia were found to have appropriated 61 million yuan by repeating construction applications, the National Audit Office said on its website today.

The materials suppliers of four airports in Chengdu, Daqing, Yulin and Urumqi were found to use fake invoices to settle accounts with construction companies to avoid taxes totaling 33 million yuan.

One sub-contractor for Chengdu airport in Sichuan Province evaded income tax by giving receipts rather than invoices to the airport construction contractor, involving another 65 million yuan.

Irregularities were also found in one-fifth of airport contracts, involving about 1.9 billion yuan.

The National Audit Office checked 31 airports in 10 provinces and autonomous regions, including Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Fujian, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Xinjiang.

In the five years ending 2010, 53 airports in China underwent construction or expansion. The total investment of those projects mounted 68.2 billion yuan.
