Bankcard owners spend

CONFIDENCE among China's bankcard owners in March grew 0.43 percent from a month ago on lower food prices and higher spending on traveling and autos.

The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index rose 1 point from a year ago to 87.2 in March, said a report released yesterday by China UnionPay, the country's sole bankcard transaction firm.

The higher supply of seasonable vegetables starting at the beginning of March has cut prices of agricultural products which then raised spending on non-daily necessities.

In March, transactions at restaurants and travel agencies grew 1.33 percent and 0.15 percent from a month ago respectively, according to UnionPay.

New car launches last month pushed up auto sales.
