Flawed Subsidies
AUDITORS found that 330 million yuan (US$48.5 million) in government subsidies was wrongly given last year to 62,900 households whose income exceeded requirements, the chief auditor said yesterday.
Liu Jiayi, head of the National Audit Office, said that of the unqualified families that received the subsidy, 11,900 were found to own private enterprises, cars or at least two real estate properties.
Auditing also found that nine cities, unidentified by Liu, last year gave 869,000 yuan in low-rent housing subsidies and 74 apartments to 705 unqualified families.
Liu said the main reasons for the misallocations were poor scrutiny of the applicants' qualifications, slack supervision and a failure to promptly update applicants' income and property status.
