CHINA UnionPay Co yesterday teamed up with Citibank to go deeper in the payment markets in Asia.
The pact enables UnionPay cards to be accepted at Citibank merchants in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Vietnam.
The deal covers both payment at points of sale and also online purchases via Citibank merchants.
The deal came as UnionPay bids to go deeper in overseas markets besides expanding its own network to fight off rivals such as Visa Inc and MasterCard Worldwide.
To date, UnionPay cards issued both at home and abroad have exceeded 2.4 billion.
