Green and clean
THE Shanghai Clearing House and the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange launched central counterparty clearing for carbon emission allowances trading yesterday. The yuan-denominated clearing service was the first of its kind in China. Zhou Bo, Shanghai’s vice mayor, said the launch will be influential in the city’s green finance and sustainable development. Central counterparty clearing is a process by which financial transactions are cleared by a central counterparty such as the Shanghai Clearing House. On the first day, about 123,000 tons of carbon emission allowances valued at 3.64 million yuan (US$528,000) were traded.
