Peter Wong named chairman of HSBC Bank China

HSBC Holdings PLC has named Peter Wong as the chairman of its fully-owned HSBC Bank (China) Co Ltd, succeeding Vincent Cheng who retired recently. The appointment has obtained regulatory approval and is effective immediately.

"China is the growth engine of the global economy and a key focus of our emerging markets strategy," Peter Wong said. "We will continue to leverage our strong brand to build on our position as the lead international bank in China."

In addition to this new appointment, Wong is currently chief executive of the HSBC, the group managing director of HSBC Holdings PLC and a member of its management board.

Wong has more than 30 years' banking experience. He joined HSBC in 2005 and has held senior management roles, including deputy chairman and non-executive director of HSBC Bank (China) Co Ltd since April 2007.

He was chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Banks in 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2009.

Wong was educated at Indiana University in the United States and holds a Master's degree in computer science and an MBA in marketing and finance.
