Telco eyes switch to Internet platform
CHINA Mobile set up a subsidiary for mobile video services to generate content by users as part of moves by the company to transform into an Internet platform.
The Migu subsidiary offers its more than 800 million users content covering music, video, reading, games and animation as the world’s biggest mobile carrier tries to ward off the challenges posed by instant messaging tools and social sites which hit China Mobile’s revenue for its traditional voice and short message.
Wang Bin, CEO of Migu’s video business, said that video content will be the core application in the mobile Internet era as more than 70 percent of mobile traffic are videos seen by 200 million viewers daily on China Mobile’s network.
Migu’s content and services are part of China Mobile’s transformation from a mobile carrier to an Internet platform offering various services, said Wang.
To encourage local producers and boost the development of mobile video, Migu held a national short-video contest in Shanghai.
