US chicken duties need re-look
China will re-examine the “original evidence” linked to the imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on chicken imports from the United States, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.
The US chicken case will be investigated again based on Chinese anti-dumping and countervailing regulations as well as a World Trade Organization ruling in September, the Chinese ministry said.
“We will examine the original evidence and information obtained from the previous investigation, and will assess the new conditions through collecting questionnaire and holding hearings,” the ministry said in a statement.
The process will be kept transparent as “parties concerned can check the public version of related evidence and information through the ministry” and it will offer opportunities for all to disclose information and express opinions, the ministry said.
A WTO panel in August ruled in favor of a US complaint against Chinese anti-dumping duties averaging 51.8 percent and countervailing duties averaging 30.3 percent imposed on their chicken exports in 2009. The WTO then adopted the decision in September without receiving an appeal from China.
The US and China have been embroiled in a number of trade disputes in the past four years.
