3G phone pay on the way
CHINA Telecom and China UnionPay will jointly launch 3G phones, which will be able to purchase products directly at POS (point of sales) machines, in Shanghai by the end of the year, the telecommunications carrier said today.
The mobile payment application is expected to be popular in the 3G era and China Telecom's phones may be the first phones with pay functions in China, analysts said.
China Telecom launched the 3G mobile payment services in Shanghai today. This allows users to make appointments with specialists or order concert tickets through the phone.
"The phone with the direct payment function is on our schedule and it will be ready this year. After its launch, people can use the phone to pay on all POS machines just like credit cards," said Wang Shiwei, chief engineer of China Telecom's Shanghai branch.
The pay phones might also be used on buses and Metro lines, Wang added.
Users can access the payment functions with a change of SIM card.
The mobile phone payment application has proved popular in other countries.
The electronics payment market revenue in China will be worth 1.9 billion yuan (US$278.483 million) in 2009, a 30 percent growth year-on-year, Shanghai Telecom said.
