AMD still bogged by acquisition
ADVANCED Micro Devices Inc cut its fourth-quarter loss, but not as sharply as Wall Street had hoped, as the chip maker took a big hit over the falling value of an acquisition.
AMD, like Intel Co and Microsoft Co, is suffering from the evaporating sales of personal computers, which have sapped demand for chips and software.
AMD said yesterday it reduced its net fourth-quarter loss from US$1.8 billion to US$1.4 billion.
The chip maker keeps paying heavily for its 2006 acquisition of ATI Technologies, a maker of graphics chips that the company originally bought for US$5.6 billion.
