Ad Income Boosts Tencent's Profits
TENCENT Holdings yesterday said profits in the second quarter rose 61 percent to 1.92 billion yuan (US$283 million) on rising advertising income and booming value-added service revenue.
The operator of the country's largest instant messaging service QQ said revenue jumped 62.2 percent year on year to 4.67 billion yuan. The number of active user accounts for QQ reached 612.5 million by the end of June, compared with 568.6 million three months earlier.
Income from Internet value-added services jumped 66 percent year on year to 674 million yuan in the quarter while online advertising income surged 63.6 percent to 398 million yuan.
Tencent has a 77 percent share of the instant messaging service market in China, home to 420 million web users. Microsoft's MSN Messenger has 4.2 percent.
