Alibaba's new gimmick

Alibaba showcased its virtual reality shopping technology “Buy+” at its Taobao Maker Festival in Shanghai today as it seeks to leverage cutting edge technologies to woo a new generation of innovators, geeks and practitioners in the creative industry.

The three-day festival at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition Center is showcasing more than a hundred booths featuring handmade artifact, industry leading VR technology firms and a variety of Taobao store owners as well as popular culture performances.

Alibaba chief executive officer Daniel Zhang said, “It is aiming to become a destination for innovators, entrepreneurs and creators to showcase and experiment amongst a community of 423 million Chinese consumers on our China retail marketplaces that come to Mobile Taobao to explore, discover and be entertained.”

Consumers have evolved from merely visiting Taobao to shop but to enjoy an interactive lifestyle as well as seeking products from independent designers and creators.

The official Taobao store of the Palace Museum also set up a first ever interactive zone for visitors to the festival, apart from showcasing Q version figurines of the Hongwu Emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang).

“Alibaba seeks to leverage more ways for users to engage with our retail platform and the Taobao Maker Festival hopes to inspire young makers to continue innovating and reaching the world through Taobao,” said Chris Tung, chief marketing officer at Alibaba Group.
